The Brown Bess; An Identification Guide and Illustrated Study of Britain Most Famous Musket Erik Goldstein Stuart Mowbray Books
This book is loaded with great photos and close ups of the brown bess British muskets. There is just the right amount of written history as well. I have other books on this topic and this is a great addition especially if one is interested in these old muskets or are researching a musket that they own. You do not need to read cover to cover to sort out the information as there are quick identification guides that help you jump to chapters of interest and identify a gun you may have. One problem is that many muskets that survive today have been repaired, modified, or updated and mainly guns in original condition are used in this book. So your gun may not exactly match a version shown in this book. It would have been nice to see a chapter on repaired, modified, or updated muskets. Bayonets are only covered on one page. I'm happy with my purchase.Product details

The Brown Bess; An Identification Guide and Illustrated Study of Britain Most Famous Musket Erik Goldstein Stuart Mowbray Books Reviews
This is the best and most clearly written reference book I have seen on the Brown Bess. The photography is outstanding with excellent descriptions.
Saw this book online and gave it a try as i own a brown bess and have never relly know its true age . I found all the info I needed in this book and now I might even get a new appraisal since its even older than i thought
This book is full of color pictures of each Brown Bess model (assembled, and disassembled).
A really enjoyable book with history of each model and many photos to look at!
Got here as promised and in excellent shape and very interesting history and pictures.
Excellent pics, makes identification much easier.
The problem you might find is there are many variations of the basic design over the many years these muskets were produced.
Also they were not all uniform from the many makers in what might be called a cottage industry at the time, no real production facilities as we know them today.
Surprising is the total amount that were made without mass production capabilities.
Absolutely fantastic book. An absloute must have for any Brown Bess owner as well as anyone researching them. Text is excellent and the photographs are breathtaking!!
Let me first start off by saying...WOW! While I love to read about and collect various military historical periods, my main passion is the American Civil War. I have read a fair amount over the years about the American Revolution, but it has not been my primary focus. With that said, over the last 6 months I have taken a much keener interest in the War of Independence. About a month ago I finally decided to delve heavily into the weapons of said period. I was amazed at how many weapons were employed leading up to and throughout the conflict by all parties involved. I was further surprised to find that there are not many places to see and handle specimens myself as compared to CW pieces. With all of the variances encountered in the few books I own on the subject, it quickly became evident that I needed not only more source materials, but better/clearer materials. It was at this time that I found this book on . I purchased it and have gone through it twice now, and each time I am amazed at not only the volume of information contained within its pages, but the quality of the illustrations and pictures, not to mention the vast amount of concise and easy to understand descriptions and details on the weapons contained within. Simply put, before buying the book I could identify a Brown Bess as probably being some type of Brown Bess about 5 out of 10 times. After reading the book I can quickly identify a specific pattern of Brown Bess just by looking at a picture of one. This book/guide is simply fantastic. Very well researched, and just as well laid out and photographed. I am not only impressed with it, but I am so very glad I purchased it. I own books that fall far shorter in their detailing, lack the multitude and clarity of the pictures this book presents, and are far more vague and hard to understand than this piece, and they cost 3 times as much as this work! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the British weapons used during the American Revolution, weapons enthusiasts and collectors, and anyone who is a student/researcher of military history. You simply cannot go wrong.
