Fiona believes she’s a normal, contented young woman living a normal, busy life in middle America. But she isn’t, and when she discovers what she really is, she’s compelled to return to Ireland—where her adoptive parents found her—and search for her own people a clan of mythological creatures of Celtic legend. Finding them catapults her into a world of magic, romance and danger, as she chooses to risk her life attempting to undo the effects of a crime against her clan, committed long ago by her mother.

Fiona Song Living the Myth Trilogy Book 1 edition by JoEllen C Bosson Literature Fiction eBooks

Fiona's song is a delightful combination of a young girl's coming of age, an exploration of Irish folklore, and a musical tour of Ireland.

A young American teenager, Fiona discovers a long hidden secret. Her parents had discovered her as an infant on a beach in Ireland, where her Irish Mother, Maggie, knew instantly that she was a special being. A small bit of fur found next to the baby became proof that Fiona was a Roane. Most people believed the half human/half seal world of the Roanes was a myth. But seeing the body of the infant's deceased mother, at first looking like a seal then clearly human, proved to Maggie that the baby would also follow the call of the sea given the chance.

That chance comes 16 years later in Chicago where the family lives, when Fiona discovers her sealskin. Having been hidden away in a box all these years, it had now grown from a bit of white fluff to a sleek coat as big as her.

Her parents decide it's time for the family to explore their Irish roots and for Fiona to explore her alternate life.

The story of the family's summer in Ireland and Fiona's introduction to the world of the Roanes is hard to resist. Ms. Bosson creates a fantasy world that in a very matter-of-fact way, becomes real. The mythology of the Roanes remains true to its' own rules, something many fantasy and science fiction writers struggle with. The Roanes spend part of their time as seals, part in human form, hidden away in their own world.

So Fiona straddles both human and Roane world during the summer, learning about her Roane heritage and, with her family, her Irish heritage. Skillfully wound into the story of Fiona and her family is a tutorial on Ireland; it's people, it's history and it's music. Ms Bosson has a flair for writing with an Irish accent that works, and the Irish characters the family meets are well drawn.

Finally, what coming of age story doesn't include a love story? And this one has some mystery added to the mix as well. Rather than revealing too much, let me just recommend that you read it for yourself.

Fiona's story kept me involved to the end. I look forward to the rest of the trilogy!

Delightful!
Love this book but very disappointed that there is no sequel yet after three years. This is supposed to be a trilogy. It really leaves you hanging!
I really enjoyed this book! The writing is very descriptive and the story moves along at a good pace. If you like fairy mythology, young adult fiction, Irish music, or the natural beauty of Ireland, you'll love this book. Bosson creates a fascinating and unique heroine in Fiona, the strong-willed protagonist. You grow to care deeply about Fiona, her family, and the plight of her Roane clan. I'm looking forward to the sequel!
